Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by American Legion
Overview
Each year The American Legion accepts nominations for its Eagle Scout of the Year beginning November 1 and closing March 1. Candidates must submit a complete nomination packet to their appropriate American Legion Department (state) so that it is received by March 1.
State-level selection and forwarding
The Selection Committee for each American Legion Department will review its nominees and choose the Eagle Scout judged to be the strongest in that state. The Department must then forward that winner’s packet, together with a roster of the Selection Committee members, to The American Legion National Headquarters by April 1.
Awards
- The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
- Three (3) runners-up will each receive scholarships of $2,500.
Scholarship use and disbursement
Scholarship funds become available once a recipient enrolls in an accredited trade school, college, or university within the United States. Payment will be made through an online disbursement process set up for both the student and the institution. Awardees must expend the full scholarship within four (4) years of their post–high school graduation date; time spent on active military duty or a religious mission is excluded from this timeline.
Additional recognition
The Eagle Scout of the Year will also be invited to travel with The American Legion’s Youth Champion Delegation and be honored at the organization’s annual National Convention each August.
